[fearland]
'Fearland' is my 4th year thesis project at OCADU. It highlights the emotion-driven nature of phobias by placing them into an enjoyable setting of theme park, and suggests a secure environment to confront them.
Fear is a part of our survival instinct which keeps us away from danger. However, the extreme fears grouped under the term “Phobias” are stated to be irrational, meaning it is triggered by the emotional part of our brain rather than rational or threat-calculating part. To explore this irrational nature of phobias, I decided to link their sources of fear with something that would evoke the opposite response: enjoyment. Additionally, phobia is proved to be highly treatable through exposure therapy – exposing the patient gradually to their source of fear, strictly in a safe and controlled environment. Thus, theme park settings meet all of the criteria: safe, controlled and enjoyable, a perfect place to confront your irrational fear.
